Is there any free sql server database program?

Hi, I am a hardware engineer, so far I have no idea about SQL Server, but now I am always some people who work with SQL in order to know I need to troubleshoot SQL applications. Is there a trial version or freeware software on SQL Server, so I test it in my virtual machine, whether it is based so let me know. . . . . Thanks in advance
